Have you ever said to a friend, “This book would make an awesome movie,” after you’d finished reading a gossipy, light-hearted tale or a suspenseful mystery? What if you, as a fan, actually had input in the casting of the movie roles? I understand that there are a lot of factors that go into selecting a cast – money, timing, chemistry…blah blah blah…but, let’s just go with WHAT IF for now.
Think about the outrage over the casting for Fifty Shades of Grey. Who do you think would’ve played the roles of Christian and Anastasia if the fans would’ve had a say? Would you have selected Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan? Perhaps Alexis Bledel and Matt Bomer, as one passionate fan, Alvidda Polonia, presented in a YouTube video. https://youtu.be/2BmHn_Wks30
As a reader, it makes sense that we relate to the physical characteristics and personality traits an author shares with us in a tangible sense. I know I’ve read books where I’ve thought, Oh my God, that character could be that creepy guy who hit on me while he was dating my roommate Whether it’s a friend, a co-worker or someone we see on TV, we link those we are familiar with to what we read. We invest ourselves in the characters’ lives, as if we were projected into their world. A world we often wish was real.
As a writer, I didn’t start out crafting my novel with specific celebrities in mind. Somewhere along the way, when words on the page morphed into a movie screen in my mind, I attached actors to the characters that I had created. Looking back, I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when I knew that James McAvoy was the perfect James Carlisle, nor the timing when Shirley Maclaine became my version of Margo Westfield, the calculating, control-freak bitch. At this point, how, when and where isn’t what is important. What matters is that I want those who’ve read my book to have a say, even if the producers and studio execs may later disagree.
So, here’s what you need to do if you want to have input on selecting the future cast of Complicated…by Design.
1) READ Complicated…by Design. It’s available here:
2) VOTE. Go to my website’s Drama Page to see the star-studded cast that I envision playing the roles. If you don’t like who I’ve picked, type in who you would choose. It’s that easy.
Of course I can’t say I’d ever see anyone else, other than the sexy, blue-eyed McAvoy, playing James. Just sayin’…I mean, did you see that photo above?
3) PASS IT ON. Spread the word to all your friends so they can vote, too!
