Why don’t books have soundtracks?

Movies have soundtracks. Why don’t books? Music guides the emotional context of motion pictures, so why not the written word?

While I was writing my first novel, Complicated…by Design, I had a soundtrack running through my head. Whether the radio was playing in the car, a character was soothed by a break-up song or someone had an obnoxious ringtone, music infiltrated my characters’ world in a manner that is true to the way we live. Considering we are surrounded by music on a daily basis via TV shows, commercials, radio and personal playlists, I felt including music was a relatable fit for readers.

Complicated…by Design is set in 2012, thus the music is prior to that date.  However, if I had to choose a title song for the movie it would be Echosmith’s 2013 release of Bright. You can check out their heavenly video on YouTube

Complicated…by Design has a diverse collection of songs that spans decades. Pop songs with melodic structures that get stuck in your head are mixed with 90s rock ringtones and music written by singer-songwriters, amongst other genres. Now, if only iTunes or Spotify sold ebooks with designated playlists, your reading pleasure would be enhanced.
